چکیده
A FEW isolated facts have stimulated the writing of this review. The chief are (i) The finding by some workers that an antigen made from the urethral discharge of patients with " Waelsch urethritis" acts like Frei antigen in cases of lymphogranuloma inguinale. (2) The discovery by Gay-Prieto, Findlay, Miyagawa and others of the bodies now believed to be the virus of lymphogranuloma inguinale. (3) The previous discovery by many workers of somewhat similar inclusion bodies in cases of " Waelsch urethritis," inclusion blennorrhcea, trachoma and some other diseases. It appeared to us worth while to search the literature to discover, if possible, any further evidence indicating a relationship between the above diseases. Before discussing the papers which have been studied for this review it seems necessary to state the criteria on which a diagnosis of Waelsch urethritis has been founded because they appear to have differed according to the importance attached to the urethroscopic appearances. In I9OI, Waelsch described a rare form of nongonorrhceal urethritis which he believed to be a clinical entity. It was characterised principally by its relatively long incubation period, the slightness of its subjective and objective symptoms and its almost complete resistance to treatment. The incubation Feriod varied from

Inclusion bodies in nongonococcal urethritis; also skin lesions with inclusions.
In a recent statistical survey of 2,756 cases of non-gonococcal urethritis examined at the Urological Clinic of the Faculty of Medicine in Paris (Hopital Cochin), inclusion bodies were found in 84, i.e., an average of about 3 per cent. In patients suffering from the urethro-conjunctivo-synovial syndrome, we have found, as previously reported by Harkness (1945), inclusion bodies in scrapings fro...

A co-operative study has been made of the age groups of 43,078 male and female patients attending 148 venereal diseases clinics of England, Wales, and Scotland with infectious venereal disease during 1957 and 1958. "Infectious venereal disease" was taken to comprise gonorrhoea, primary and secondary syphilis, and "other conditions", which included chancroid, lymphogranuloma venereum, and granul...

The earliest reference to a disease now known to be of chlamydial aetiology is to be found in the EBERS papyrus (1500 B.C.). A cicatrizing eye disease, and its treatment with copper salts, is described. This disease was first called 'trachoma' (rough eye) in A.D. 60 by the Sicilian physician Pedonius Diascarides. Moses' warning concerning the 'running issue of his flesh' (Leviticus 15 w. 1-2) m...

The search for effective anti-viral agents continues in many laboratories in a number of countries. A clinical trial of 7218 (2:3 dimethyl quinoxaline dioxide) in lymphogranuloma inguinale 8 years ago (Alergant, 1953) showed that although the drug was therapeutically active, toxic side-effects prevented its being regarded as a useful addition to the pharmacopoeia. Although of no value in the tr...
متن کاملEvolution of venereology in India.
The older terminology of ‘venereal diseases’ (VDs) largely has been superseded in the past 50 years by ‘sexually transmitted diseases’ (STDs) and more recently by ‘sexually transmitted infections’ (STIs). To some, venereal diseases came to be viewed as a narrow and pejorative term limited to gonorrhea, syphilis, chancroid, lymphogranuloma venereum and granuloma inguinale and related VD control ...
